Book Review: A Long Walk To Water
By Jessica L.
A Long Walk To Water is a book that has 2 different perspectives, both taking place in Sudan, a country in Africa. The 2 main characters, Salva and Nya, are both 11 years old, and they are facing many problems, like water complications and war.
Nya is 11 years old, and her story takes place in 2008 to 2009. 7 months of the year, she walks 8 hours to the only source of water for her family, a dirty pond. Her family is part of the Nuer tribe, a tribe in Sudan.
One day, some people come to her village, and what they bring will change Nya’s life forever. They are going to build a well.
Unlike Nya, Salva is part of the Dinka tribe, an enemy of the Nuer tribe. His story takes place from 1985 to 2007.
Salva is very lucky, because he has the privilege of going to school. His father is very successful in business, and Salva loves his family. But one day at school, his village is attacked, and he runs away, ending up in a refugee camp.
Salva travels through Africa, through different countries. He makes a few friends, and finds his uncle. But his friends all die, and so does his uncle. Salva is alone. But one day, after many, many years of being a refugee, Salva is given another chance. He is going to be sent to America.
This story gives the message of hope, and determination. I recommend this book because it is exciting and you won’t be able to put it down!
