The iPhone X
By Lucas H. and Vibhav K. The first iPhone X was released on November 3, 2017 and now has sold around 500,000 per day according to Forbes Welcome! Isn’t that a crazy amount? To get even crazier, towards the end of November 2017, Apple had sold nearly 15,000,000 iPhone X’s! Read on to learn about the iPhone X’s amazing features. Prior to its release, leaked information from the company Apple suggested that the new iPhone X is able to charge from up to 3 ft away from the WattUp Platform. The iPhone X was released in the later half of 2017.The reason that the iPhone X might be able to charge from 3ft away is because Apple is working on a product called the ‘WattUp’ platform that uses the small antenna that transmits energy over an estimated 3 ft. Rumors suggest that another company Foxconn Technology Group were making plans for Apple’s iPhone X. The iPhone X has no home button. To go to the home screen you must swipe up. The advanced touch technology allows the iPhone X to work better with ios 11.00. To think that the first iPhone that apple released was released on June 29th, 2007 and that we are already at the iPhone ten or X only 11 years later. Is that amazing or what?! The iPhone X can do some extraordinary things! Get it now!!!! The ocean has too much trash!
By Lucas H. Americans use around 2,500,000 plastic bottles EVERY HOUR. That is 60000000 and makes about 10,500,000 TONS (21000000000 lbs) of waste each year. Only 1%-2%(210000000-420000000 lbs) of it are recycled! An estimated 14,000,000,000 lbs of trash, much of it plastic that could have been recycled, instead is being dumped into the world's oceans. Every year people are making the ocean have even more trash. At this rate studies show that by 2050 in the ocean there will be more plastic and trash than there will be fish so if we continue that is our kids beach day. The good news is you can help! Next time you are at the beach, clean up all of the trash you see before it can blow into the ocean! Next time don't go to the garbage once you've finished your water bottle, instead go to the recycling bin but also be sure not to put trash in the recycle bin. If there is too much trash in one load of recycle then they will reject it and send it to the dump creating more trash then would have started in the first place. Some interesting facts from the website Conserve Energy Future: Fact 1: There is an island of garbage twice the size of Texas inside the Pacific Ocean: the North Pacific Gyre off the coast of California is the largest oceanic garbage site in the entire world. There, the number of floating plastic pieces outnumbers total marine life six to one in the immediate vicinity. Fact 2: The biggest source of pollution in the ocean is directly from land based sources, such as oil, dirt, septic tanks, farms, ranches, motor vehicles, among larger sources. Thousands of tons of waste and trash are dumped into the ocean on a daily basis, and even if it is released hundreds of miles away from land, it still washes up on beaches and coastal areas, and affects everything in between. Every marine animal is affected by man-made chemicals released in the water. Fact 3: Over one million seabirds are killed by ocean pollution each year. Three hundred thousand dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in discarded fishing nets, among other items. One hundred thousand sea mammals are killed in the ocean by pollution each year. Fact 4: Oil and plastic are the most damaging materials in the ocean. Most oil causing harm in the ocean is a result of drainage from land--only 12% come from oil spills. Plastic is especially problematic because it can absorb all the toxic chemicals present in the ocean from pollution, therefore becoming poisonous for whatever animal tries to eat it. Plastic does not degrade; instead, it breaks down into progressively smaller pieces, but never disappears. Overall, plastic is the number one source of pollution in the ocean. If you are wondering where to drop it off just go to the recycling center in your town or put it out for curbside pickup. click here for the dates and rules of curbside pickup. People say this might be a complete waste of money if the plan fails and they mean it. I mean, $5 billion dollars go to waste! The project has been hit by some financial problems last winter but there is some hope out there. So let’s cross our fingers and hope the project is a complete success! By Saanvi P. Have you ever wondered about the fiery planet that we call Venus? Wonder why it was named Venus, or even why is Venus so hot? Venus was named after the Roman goddess Venus. Venus is the goddess of love. You probably think it is weird that they named such a green and scary planet after her, but if you think back to the time before Venus got completely horrible… Wait! I forgot to tell you! According to famous scientist Neil Degrasse Tyson, in his show Cosmos he said that the planet Venus might not have always been so gassy and hot! He said that it might have been like Earth or a better, a paradise! I wonder if they had Disneyland in that paradise….Anyway, which proves that maybe there was, or is life on Venus! Venera 7The Venera 7, the first spacecraft to land on Venus was only there for a couple of minutes, and couldn’t show much of Venus. It was launched August 17, 1970 and landed on Venus on December 15, 1970. It was on Venus’s surface for a little over 20 minutes, that might seem like a pretty big amount for some things like a boring lecture or waiting FOR YOUR DAD TO ORDER HARRY POTTER TICKETS, but to explore a planet? It wouldn’t even be that great with a day, let alone not even an hour! I think one year would be the best, or even a month! Venus’s sky The clouds on Venus are made of sulfuric acid, which is so deadly. It melts everything it touches, so when it rains on Venus it rains acid! And you thought that it rained hard enough on Earth! And something else that will blow your mind - Mercury and Venus are the only planets without moons! Why? Because, when the moons were formed, a giant rock hitting the planets, Venus couldn’t have escaped that hit! Venus used to have a moon but started going away because of tidal reactions. A tidal reaction basically means something causing it to go away. The same thing is happening to our moon! Another thing: a rock hit Venus two times, so now Venus is rotating in the opposite direction. I wonder how the aliens on Venus felt on THAT roller coaster! Fun Facts: Did you know that 117 Earth days to complete one day on Venus? It’s because it is spinning the opposite way from Earth, but 225 Earth days make one year on Venus! Two days on Venus is more than a year! Imagine how aliens celebrate THEIR New Years! As you can see below, Venus and Earth are very similar in size! School Supply Sale

An Interview with Mr.Campbell
By Amber V. Are you a 5th grader? Maybe 4th or 3rd? Have you ever wondered about the teachers in our school? Well if you answered yes to any of these questions, then read on. Many of you might not know this teacher, and some of you might know him very well. It is…Mr.Campbell! He is a 5th grade teacher who is 26 years old and has been teaching for 3 years. Like everyone else he loves to spend time with his family, and a little secret- his first name is Alex! Have you ever had Mr. Jones as a teacher? Well you might have had his student as your teacher! Mr.Campbell was Mr. Jones’s student in 4th grade. Three years ago I was in E.D.P. (extended day program) and saw Mr.Campbell strolling around 5th graders. I wondered why, while also wishing he was my teacher! Now three years later he told me it was his first year teaching. Mr. Campbell leads an awesome “outside-of-school” life coaching Special Olympics for students in the school district. They do things such as soccer, bowling and track and field. Polar Bear Plunge is an event in Seaside Heights, NJ that helps Special Olympics where he has to jump into cold, freezing waters, of the ocean, in February. Usually you see your teacher at school but what if they were not your teacher anymore? I asked Mr. Campbell what he would be, if not a teacher, and he said, “I would be working with people, like in the service industry but I would work with kids, I really think that kids are more interesting than adults”. We all have a favorite subject, right, so I decided to ask him what his was and when he told me it was math I asked why. He said since there was only one right answer to a question he liked it. He also said he liked the logic involved in math. He enjoyed learning Spanish in college. One big thing that lead him to being a teacher was that he almost failed his math class so he changed his major to being a teacher. Can some teachers be boring? Well Mr. Campbell sure hopes not! He says he thinks he does “traditional teaching” a.k.a. old school teaching but always hopes he is funny. Finally when I asked him what he was proud of, it all led back to being a teacher. He said, “The career that I have chosen”. Mr.Campbell does not want to change anything in his happy life and that sounds okay with him! LEGO® Star Wars™ 75192 UCS Millennium Falcon™

By Lucas H. On November 7, 2017, Democratic nominee Phil Murphy won the New Jersey Governor race, as CNN projected. Murphy’s win makes the NJ governor position go over to the Democrats. This was predicted to happen, but this is a change because the past eight years have been Republican led. Phil Murphy won over the Republican Candidate Kim Guadagno. Because Guadagno was the Lieutenant Governor and partner with Christie, who is no longer popular, this may have been why she lost this election. Quinnipiac University polls taken over the past several months pegged Christie's approval rating regularly in the mid to low teens. Guadagno sought to distance herself from Christie's toxic image in the state, but as his lieutenant governor, she failed to sway voters, who Quinnipiac showed gave her low marks as well. New Jersey holds its elections in off years, meaning the year after the nation elects its president. The voters of the Garden State must return to the polls to choose their governor. Over the past several cycles, these elections have delivered governors from the opposite party of the President. The victory for Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive who was also the US ambassador to Germany, continues this trend. Top 5 CRAZIEST PLANETS you have EVER SEEN
By Jessica L. The universe is an extraordinary place. And it contains a lot of BIZARRE planets that you will never believe exist. So try not to be too surprised as you read about these five crazy planets 5. Kepler-16b This. planet orbits 2 stars!!!!! Which means that there are 2 suns in the sky. If you were taken to this planet, you would die from the really, really EXTREME temperature, but let’s say you are immune to this stuff, then you would have 2 shadows! Well, this must be delightful for your lonely shadow on earth! Kepler-16b is a gas planet, and the stars it orbits also orbit each other! A year on this planet is 228 days. It is located in our galaxy, the Milky Way. 4. COROT-7b If you think our weather is violent, you wouldn’t be able to THINK of a word to describe COROT-7b, located 489 light year away from Earth. Here, on this planet, it rains- guess what? Not cotton candy, not water, not bubble gum, what could it be? The answer is: ROCKS. This planet is a scorching 2,600 degrees Celsius, and its other side (not facing its sun) is 177 degrees Celsius. On the hot side, it is SO EXTREMELY HOT rocks can EVAPORATE into liquid rock. Then, the liquid rock condenses into rock clouds, and it will rain magma (another name for liquid rock). But often, since it is cooler the higher you go, and the cool side is colder than the hot side, (but still HOT) the magma can harden into rock, and rain down. Crazy, right!? 3. HD189773-b COROT-7b is not so bad compared to this planet. It is a beautiful blue, and it is 63 light years away from Earth. It is a little bigger than Jupiter, but its beauty hides a dark secret. The wind on this planet is 5,400 mph! This is 2 km per second, and 7 times the speed of sound. The temperature can go up to 930 degrees Celsius, and most terrifyingly, it rains GLASS. HORRIFYING, right!? 2. J1407-B J1407-B is 400 light years away from Earth. Its rings are 200 TIMES those of Saturn’s!!! Its rings are SO BIG that if it replaced Saturn, the rings would be seen in the sky a lot larger that a FULL MOON. 1. 55 Cancri E This planet might be made of DIAMONDS!!! Yup, diamonds. It is twice the size of Earth (boy, that’s a lot of jewelry) and its surface temperature is (you’re not gonna believe this) 2,700 DEGREES CELSIUS!!!!! (4,900 degrees Fahrenheit!!!!!) The diamonds on this planet (if you sold them) are worth 26.9 NONILLION dollars!!!!! This planet is approximately 40 light years away. Our universe is full of unbelievable crazy planets, and if you want to find more CRAZY planets, go to space.com. New Found Dinosaur!
By Saanvi It is an ostrich! It’s a duck! It’s a swan! No… it’s a dinosaur! Paleontologists Pascal Godefroit, Andrea Ceu, and Paul Tafforeau are researchers who are investigating this new dinosaur. It has the bill of a duck, neck of a swan, teeth of a crocodile, had killer claws, had flippers like a penguin and walks like an ostrich. It is the first found dinosaur that eats meat and swims. All that is packed in a tiny 18 inch body. It lived 750 years ago on what is now Mongolia. Dennis Voeton, a paleontology researcher at Palacky University said,”It is such a peculiar animal,” and he is right. This animal is one to be remembered for a very long time. Even though the dinosaur can’t dive, it may have the ability, like modern day aquatic creatures to float. They decided to name this dinosaur Halszkaraptor. Paleontologists believe that this dinosaur belonged to a wider group of dinosaurs and maybe have evolved a lifestyle completely different from all other dinosaurs known to humans! That means that there might be a completely different race of dinosaurs that we don’t know about yet! This dinosaur is very different and will researched for a lot longer. |
